Creative Endeavors

Grace really wanted to make snack for her class one day, so she used some corn tortillas and wrapped up meat and cheese.  I helped her with the toothpicks and rolling, but she did most of it on her own!

Alice will get up early to cook for her band classmates (it's a small group, because it's only the middle school band students who are also in algebra.)  She wanted some sugar cookie mix, so I bought her some, and she attempted to use the drill to mix the icing.  It didn't work very well, but I was pleased with her problem solving attempt.

A few weeks later, Grace wanted to make snack again, but this time was able to rope Juliet in as well.  They made 'dirt cups' with pudding and oreos and gummy worms.  We had plenty of the last two, but the pudding was in short supply. 4-6 packs would have been better.   At least I'll know for next time!

The twins were off on one of the days that I made a BJs run, and at the exit, Grace wanted to stop by to get some materials to build a fort.  We found some good options and they were both quite happy in their creations.

One of Alice's online communities was having a pumpkin carving contest, and there was also going to be an in person contest here in our village, so she requested 2 pumpkins to cut up and combine.  She worked hard on her creation.

It didn't quite turn out the way she had envisioned, it was supposed to be a dragon.  Sadly, it was mildewed and gross long before the in person contest, so she only had an opportunity to submit it online.

I found some cute jello molds with Halloween shapes.  Grace and Alice both took turns making a round of Jello.  I liked the candy eye that Grace added on!

One day Emily really wanted some chocolate syrup to put on her banana.  I told her she should make the start of the no-bake cookies, as it' a good syrup.  She did, and then finished making the cookies, as not to waste the rest of the syrup.

I'm not sure what the big girls were practicing for, maybe they were just having fun, but they enjoyed face-painting!

Grace and Juliet got and invitation to a birthday party on the Tuesday before the party.  I didn't have any solid plans for that Wednesday, so I spent the day sewing up a set of bags and cord wraps.  After school (it was an early release Wednesday for them) we went to the Dollar Tree so that they could each pick out two things to give her.  They both opted for a balloon and bag of candy.

I thought it came out really well, and they had a good time at the party!  They were the only guests, since it was the Sunday before Halloween, and short notice, but they didn't complain.

At the bookfair one of Grace and Juliet's classmates bought a candy machine.  I was working that afternoon (when they were excited about it, and desperate to buy it) so I was able to inspect the object in question.  Y'all, it was such a cheap product.  I am flabbergasted that a toy like that would fetch $18.  I do realize that they are selling to children, but it is a book fair!!!

The girls looked up a similar toy on Amazon, which was still $12, which is just so expensive for cheap plastic that is just going to break with any sort of harsh treatment.

I had bought a bag of M&Ms that day at Aldi, so I encouraged them to make their own out of recycling!

They roped Emily into it, and made a device that had a turning component and everything!

It turned out super cute!  It was really neat, until they mixed skittles in with the M&Ms (ew!)  They played with it the entire day, and at the end of the weekend, when it was no longer exciting, I recycled the components again.  And it was a major win for me, as I've not heard another peep about the book fair one!

One of the shirts that Emily inherited from my mom developed a hole.  I had it in my mending pile, and finally pulled it out to work on while I watched through CB Strike again.

I just did a small embroidery stitch, but the material around the hole is very thin, I told her I don't' know how long it will last before another hole appears.  She's happy for now though and there's no longer a hole! = )

When I was in Berlin, Christin pointed out that I had a hole in my skirt.  I just pulled my shirt down over it, but when I took it off to inspect it, I found that it was not just one hole, but several from large to tiny!!  It looks like it was caught in the zipper of our suitcase, and I would think that would be more of the TSA's m.o. than mine, so I'm blaming them!

Either way, I had a hole that needed to be mended.  I had an article about using embroidery to repair holes in clothing, and a separate article about a Japanese method called Shashiko which uses geometric patterned thread lines to mend a garment.  I opted to combine the methods into my own strange conglomeration.

The tip that was the most helpful is to pick a repair fabric that is lighter weight than the original.  I had some silk scraps in my scrap pile, so that's what I used.

My chalk lines did not stay on very well. = (

I was pleased with the final product, or at least happy to no longer have a hole!!!  I'm hoping that I won't have to repair it again for a while, but won't be able to test it out until summer.  Since we're averaging in the 50s now, I'm not willing to try it out just yet. ; )

I bought the twins a used cotton candy machine for $5 at a thrift store!  When I went to test it out I saw that you could put in hard candies as well as the candy floss sugar. After checking out the prices on Amazon for the sugar containers, I decided that hard candy was the way to go!

We didn't get any hard candies from the trunk or treat, except for lollipops!  So, when I failed to get Billy the brewery for his Halloween village from Menards (they were sold out, and I had a rebate slip burning a hole in my pocket) I grabbed a giant bag of dum dums.

First step was to sort.  They even have a cotton candy flavored one, which will be perfect for Christmas morning!

I has to heat up for 10 minutes before putting in the candy!

Billy picked sour apple for the trial.  Time to crunch it up!

1 Tablespoon at a time!

Success!

8 lollipops made quite a bit, but it was messy!!!  We'll have to set the machine in a box during the holiday, because lollipop pieces flew everywhere!

Considering one of my shower curtains doesn't even use shower curtain holders, I feel like I use them for an awful lot in my life!

I bought some 'shoe keepers' for our snow boots, because the smell was a little much.  I didn't like that we would just have to set them inside the shoe rack though, because the racks get really wet once the snow arrives.  I dug out a basket from my pile, and it worked nicely.  I did end up trading out the red basket for a black one though.

Emily and Avia found a jacket with her school logo on it, but it was for a softball player. For $5, they bought it, and Emily added it to my pile with a request that I change it to Cross Country, as one of her Christmas gifts!

The first step was taking out the original embroidery.  Thankfully, it was embroidered after the jacket was fully assembled, so I was able to access both sides of the thread.

After 6 or 7 episodes of CB Strike: done!

Step two was aligning the original embroidery with the new.  It was tricky, especially with the metal snaps on the jacket, but I think I got it pretty darn close!  And, despite the fact that I can see all of the things that aren't perfect about it, I think Emily will be pleased. = )

This season is really full of fun crafts and activities!

I'm attempting to do a Secondhand Christmas for my crew this year.  I don't want to buy any of the 'trendy' (aka cheap) things on Amazon, but rather used gifts that fit the bill!

I'm finding that some of the components are going to have to be new, like film for the $10 Polaroid go camera I scored for Grace last Friday. And secondhand Children's books in Russian are proving particularly elusive.  But that's still less waste than also buying the camera new or buying all the books new!  And it's stretched my creative capacity as well, which I enjoy.

Here's to more thrift store finds!

Halloween and Trunk-or-Treat

We signed up to host a trunk at the twins' school for the last time!!!  It is bittersweet, though we only did it twice.  We should have done it every year, because it was awesome for them to have a place to leave and return for the duration!

This year, as I was collecting my trunk or treat decorations, I could not track down the adapter that would make an outlet powered by my car port!!!!  I emptied the Halloween bin, and even looked through the ones that were just holding Billy's empty Halloween village boxes!  I checked the indoor camping bin, the two 'winter emergency bins' that I keep in either vehicle, and every nook and cranny I could find in our cars (I even checked with my car jack!)  Plan B was to use Billy's car, which has a built in plug, but his car is full of bulky work molds....

I finally had to give up the search, but as we turned the corner onto the street I thought of one more place to check, and lucky me, it was in with all the 'random' electronics!!!!  Obviously, I've placed it back there for future use.

Billy collected AEW from their Halloween dance at 5, and the four of them joined us in the parking lot.

Grace and Juliet fell right in with their friends, William still has plenty of friends (with younger siblings) and Emily volunteered to work a shift in the cafeteria, so I didn't see all of them at once until we got home!

Alice mostly sat in the car, but when I snapped this picture, she was out collecting candy, so I just managed the four of them.

William and Weston!

And, I even have a picture of me and Billy that I pulled from the PTO facebook page!  The girls made some leaves with faces, which were really well received!  I did miss our dead rocks this year.  = (

Alice made a beautiful "Persephone" costume, but when she took it off after trunk or treat, she broke the zipper!  She'd already removed the flowers from the dress by the time I got home, but the mask was still decorated.  Well, mostly decorated.  She had two horns on it at the start of the day, and was down to a single by the end of the event.

She looked really pretty, I was sad not to get a "full" costume picture, but she humored me and put on the broken dress the next morning for a picture. = )

Halloween this year fell on the coldest day we've had since May, and was on a Tuesday.  I could not wait for it to be over!

In the morning, I had socks, a fresh toothbrush, a Roblox gift card, and Halloween Kinder egg waiting with each of my dear ones.  They were surprisingly excited about the toothbrushes this year!  The count-chocula cereal that I get each year is always well received, and yet, we still have over half a container left a week later.  I think maybe they don't actually like the cereal! = 0

Kennedy came over a little before 6, and promptly at 6pm, we started trick or treating!

Emily and Aubrey (Abby's sisters) came over right at 6, so we all set off in two groups.  The older girls and William went faster and further, while all the Moms (Jennifer, Nicole, and I) stayed with the slower little girls.

Willow and her friend caught up with the big kid group, and I managed a quick picture before they were out of sight!

As we walked, it got colder and snowier and wetter!

Our group did the 'short' circuit and we were back at 6:50.  The Emilys and William lasted another 30 minutes, and Alice and her group 20 more than them, but no one lasted the 2 hours.  It was so wet and cold!

Billy stayed home to pass out candy while we were out. We managed to pass out almost all of our treats, by giving out literal handfuls at the end of the window, but still had some leftover.

My snow truck had its first snow portrait of the season that night!

Phantom's Feast

A few months ago, Kristy asked me if we would like to go with them to Phantom's Feast at the Ren Faire Grounds!  I'm like, of course! So once tickets were on sale we snatched them up to go enjoy an evening out!

They came and collected us, and dropped off Zoey (Grace's bff) to hang out with our crew for the evening.

Kristy knocked it out of the park as Wednesday, her costume was so good!!!  David didn't dress up, and Billy and I reprised our Oktoberfest outfits.  I actually ended up wearing the dirndl that Christin gave me when I visited her in Berlin, because it was thicker and had pockets!!!

Kristy sent me some of the pictures that I didn't have via text, and I think they lost some quality. = (

If pressed, we were "Hansel and Gretel" but no one from our table was selected. I thought it was because I was on my phone consoling William and admonishing the twins, but I like her theory better.

Oh no, the dragon got Wednesday!!!!

The ambiance and environment were so well done!!! They had candy out for us when we were seated at our table.

A very fancy aperitif!

The food was really, really good! I only took a picture of the appetizer, but it was all delicious!

At one point there was a terrifying moment where the lady at the table next to ours was choking!  The waitress tapped David to step in because of his height, but luckily it didn't' come to that!  It was the first time I'd ever been anywhere with someone choking before!  I can only imagine how terrifying it was for the lady in the midst of it.

Well, anyhow, Kristy's theory is that they were passing out the tokens for people to go up during this time, and with the disturbance, no one from our side was chosen.  Which, looking back, was true, and so it might not have been my phone usage that disqualified us!

It was a cold night! I was glad for my warmer dirndl and sweater and coat and Billy's coat!  The toilets were outside, so it was not a fun trip outside!

We had a great time, and would love to make this a yearly tradition!

English Inn: Macabre Masquerade

For Christmas last year, Billy bought tickets for a live action murder mystery.  At that event, they were already promoting their next mystery in October!  So, we came home and bought tickets for the next round, which was six months away!

Life got pretty busy between summer camps, school starting, a Halloween themed party, and a trip to Germany, so it wasn't until the morning before the event that I remembered that we had plans the next day!!!  Luckily, I'd planned ahead, and we had all of our costume pieces ready to go.

I was able to reuse my costume from Jessica's birthday masquerade earlier in the year, and Billy had his way cool mask that we scored at the thrift shop the first day we were looking for masks!

It was a Sunday night again, but this time we didn't stay overnight.

As the previous one, this one was well done!  The tables were themed, and the actors are quite talented!

The props in this one were stepped up a notch!  They had a newspaper, and a scroll, and a journal that wasn't on the table when I went to take my pictures, which apparently had major clues in it. = (

Our table did not successfully solve the mystery this time. ::sniff::  One of the couples at our table were gifted the tickets by their neighbors, because the neighbors weren't able to attend, so they had no idea what to expect!  The rest of us didn't really have an excuse, because we were all at the last one, and in fact, we even got to sit with the queen!

The next round is Sherlock Holmes themed, and on our anniversary!  We bought tickets at the VIP table so that we could sit with Holmes and Watson!  And, Kristy and David are also coming!!  It promises to be a good time.

I've started collecting pieces of my costume, but as of right now, my skirt will be an altered formal dress that I got at Goodwill for $2, and I haven't really gotten to start the process with all of the other things that have been happening!  Robotics season is almost over though, it ends next Saturday, so maybe I'll have a little more time. lol. I wish.

I love that we have this amazing event so close to home*!!

Emergency Alert Systems

While we were in Germany they tested out the Emergency alert system.  I was on the train on my way back to Freudenstadt from Berlin.  It was a wild experience to be in a confined public place, because all of a sudden we were united in this moment.

The alarm itself was met with nervous laughter, and many phones sounded twice (mine went off first in English, then a short time later, in German.)

One of the ladies on the train was super embarrassed, because she had turned off the first alarm, and it was her second alarm going off for a very long time.  She hadn't realized that it was hers and admitted that she was annoyed by 'whoever' had theirs going off. Gave us all another chuckle.

Back home, a few weeks later, I was home all by my lonesome when the alert went off, in Spanish, on my phone!

I was in the middle of texting Billy to see if his were also in Spanish, when I got the alert in English.

I'm feeling the slightest bit unnerved by the fact that they think we need to have these at all (do they know something we don't know?) But I hope to never have to hear it, outside of testing, again.
