School Events

During parent teacher conference week, I was able to volunteer to work the bookfair, which meant that I drove the three little ones to school one morning, and picked them up one afternoon. They were big fans of that.

When I signed up for parent teacher conferences, I didn't realize that I could only sign up for 12 times per email.  So, my timeslots were off, because I had selected them and the timer hadn't timed out for them while I was trying to sign up! Ahhhhhh.  I'll know for the spring.  I digress.  I try to put five minutes in between each meeting, in case they are running behind (and they tend to,) and between that and scheduling double appointments for the twins, we ended up with a huge chunk of time at the end of the night.  So, the twins did some posing in the cool bench they never have time to sit on during the school day!

Spirit week once again had Adam Sandler day, so Emily borrowed some of Billy's clothes to rock the look.

Not my job day for the younger three.

Country vs Country Club Day for the big girls.

Grace was trying out her outfit for 2000s day.  She looked adorable, but I totally forgot to snap a picture the next morning.  Juliet also looked cute!

Emily dressed in red, white, and blue for dress for the wrong occasion day.

William's math teacher gives extra credit to students who create the most creative craft out of their finished math workbook at the end of the unit.  William's friend had made a paper chain, and he wasn't sure if he could best that, but was happy to try and make the origami swan garland.  He isn't certain if he will get points too, since they are in different classes, but his teacher did put the swans up under the paper chain, so maybe?

Emily made plans to get ready with her friends, then meet up with her homecoming date, none of which I was present for, since we'd already made plans with the Corniches, but thankfully there were plenty of pictures that she was able to share with me after the fact!  These were my favorites.

She said that she had a great time, and it sure does look like it!  Next year, she'll be able to drive herself, and split her time between even more friends! lol

CANADA!

On Monday, we drove up to the pinky for a state park adventure after a Grand Rapids doctor visit, and it got me thinking that there aren't many state parks left toward Ann Arbor, which was slated for Wednesday.  I talked it over with my mom and Billy, and decided that it was high time to let the kids use their passports!

Since Alice rarely joins us, I shared the secret with her, so that she wouldn't miss out.  We took Billy's car in, and I readied the passports, but was able to maintain the secret!  Then, the dentist called, letting us know that William did not need to come in before starting orthodontic treatment, which allowed me to bump Juliet's appointment up to William's time!  This meant more time in Canada!

Finally, the day arrived, and we headed to the appointment.  Poor Juliet was having a filling done, and my mom took everyone else over to the art museum.  All things considered, it was a short appointment, and Juliet got a smoothie from the shop, since she had a numb lip!  Yours truly got a coffee, and a cookie to share with the other children.

We finally got to reveal the secret, and everyone was excited to go to Canada!  And the mystery of why Alice was coming with us was finally solved. = )

The internet had prepared me that I could encounter issues travelling outside the country without Billy, so he'd written a letter of consent, just in case, but it was ultimately unnecessary.

We opted to take the tunnel for the outbound trip. The kids liked it and compared it to all sorts of shows and video games.

Our first stop in Canada was a thrift store!

Then we went to a discount grocer, where all the kids took turns poking the milk.

Right now, the US dollar is up against the Canadian dollar, so this baguette was really closer to 70 cents for us.  Unsurprisingly though, prices were comparable on most things, the number was just bigger.

On our Monday adventure, I'd found Canadian tattoos, which the girls were proud to sport in front of the Canadian flag!

The boba straw was paper, so they had a posted guide.  I was teasing William that I wasn't sure if he could follow the instructions, but he did just fine, first try!

Giant reflective Balls!

Once we concluded our visit to the mall, we went to Dollar Tree Canada.  Everything there is a base of $1.75can, so not any cheaper, but we found a few things, like some Hello Kitty Kinder eggs!

Juliet hanging out on the big black bollard.

By the time we finished shopping, it was close to 6, so we grabbed a hot and ready pizza and headed to the park. It was surprisingly busy!  There were all ages and races represented.  It was crazy to see the bigger kids teaching the littler kids how to play basketball, and moms and kids practicing scooter, we even saw one boy teaching another one to skateboard!  Usually, our party is the only one, or one of just a few visitors, mostly dog walkers!  It was a little like being in a movie.

We didn't stay long, because with the setting of the sun, the temperature was dropping quickly!

The Detroit skyline was most impressive from the Canadian standpoint.  It was weird driving North to get back to Michigan.  We took the Ambassador Bridge, which has quite a view.  We were dumped practically onto the interstate, and made good time getting out of Detroit.

I was thankful for the pretty weather and the opportunity to travel internationally with the kids for their first time!  Alice wants to go back for her 18th birthday, but we'll have to see!

P.S.  The only thing that Billy asked for was some Rickard's Red beer.  I was looking up how much I could bring him, before having to declare it, and learned that because of the ongoing tariff dispute between the US and Canada, I was not able to bring him any. The internet said that they would confiscate and destroy it. = (

78 Michigan Parks: Leelanau State Park #28

Now that William and the Twins are in Jr. High, I am more mindful about scheduling any feasible appointments during school breaks.  That did translate to having two appointments during this fall break, with the first one being on a Monday.  The appointment was early afternoon, and when we looked at our state park map, Emily really wanted to travel up to the pinky. So, that was our plan.

We arrived at the appointment with a little time to spare.  Avia and Emily went off on a walking adventure, and William pretended to be a car, to trigger the light.

A squished something looked like an arrow pointing at him.

The twins were piled up during our short wait for the doctor.  No news all around.  Everything looks good, and the only change was because they gained enough weight for a dose change! = )

After we stopped in at the lab for a blood draw, we were free to adventure to the state park!  We ended up on a long detour in Cadillac.  I stopped for gas, but we found a thrift shop, then stopped twice (once fail) for ice cream.  At the ice cream shop we met Luna, a child who had to go to work with her caregiver, and she was bored.  She invited the girls to sit with her, so they did.  Emily asked what ice cream she liked best and she said rainbow.  Then she asked Emily what her favorite ice cream was, so Emily told her "probably chocolate or cotton candy."  To which she replied, "but you like rainbow too." What could Emily do but affirm this? lol.

After a bathroom/sign stop* in Traverse City, we headed up to Leelanau.

They had a 250-anniversary display with all of the state flags.  Guess who I found first! = )

The trees were very colorful that far north, but I didn't have much of a chance to take a picture, and then it was almost dark and either smoky or cloudy by the time we arrived!

Let's add a second family, oh, and maybe a kitchen?

There is nothing more appealing than a forbidden staircase!

The hill was super steep, so they rolled down, for no reason.

It was a very rocky beach.

Very clear water!  Emily saw a fish, but I didn't get to see any.

The water was calm, and the air was still pretty warm! Inland we got over 80F that day, I'm not sure how warm it got at the lighthouse.

Pictures with the mini light house, and the big lightouse!

The playground was proper dark by the time we left.

Emily got some night hours in, and pulled over in Northport, so that I could take a picture of this lovely, whimsical, venue!

We stopped in Traverse City for some Culvers, before getting properly on the road. Once we got to the freeway, I took the driving over from Emily, because it was dark and raining enough in places to wet the road, but not wash off the ick.  We didn't get home until after 1AM, but it was totally worth it!  I can't wait to visit the next one, and see more of this state we live in!

edit 10-16-26: *I added the Traverse City State Park sign picture to my original blog post from 2021.  Since we were not doing the state park completion project at that time, I didn't take one, but we were only a few blocks from the sign (and restroom) when we went up to Leelanau, so we stopped to get one.  Since I've already printed that blog book, and have no intention of a reprint, I'm including the picture here too, so that I can have a printed copy, eventually.
