Back to School

We've been in back-to-school mode for about two weeks now!  Thankfully, the kids are all in the same district this year, and their district staggered the back-to-school events.

First up was William, and he had the best time, because Enisi and Edudi were still here, so Enisi came with us to the event!  They had three opportunities, so we went to the first one, which was during working hours.

I'm the most nervous for William, because the one friend who we kept in touch with over the years, with playdates and invitations is being homeschooled this year!  Fingers crossed he finds his people quickly and has a great seventh grade year!

Enisi helped William with opening his combination locker.  I didn't find out until yesterday, but apparently, they are shot on lockers, and so he has a locker buddy that he shares with!  Kind of a weird set up, but he only has to store his backpack in there, and winter clothes when the time comes.

The twins playing with some lockless lockers.

Next up, the big girls had three days to choose from, and we went on the final day, because the time slots were all during the workday.  This was the general welcome, Emily missed out on the freshmen specific night, because she went up north with her friend Emma and her family the week before.

Emily had spent so much time at the high school over the summer at color guard practice, that she had little to no nervousness for her first day, and in my mind, she was already a freshman, so I was emotionally set too!

Alice didn't seem nearly as annoyed this year!  She's already looking forward to her senior year, which still feels preemptive to me, so I'm just going to enjoy my sophomore!

I think she likes having Emily around!

Their lockers are in opposite wings.

Alice's locker was uncomfortably high for her to put in the combination, so I was able to email and get her switched to a bottom locker, but still in the opposite wing from Emily.

The twins welcome back night was just two days before they went back to school, and they only had one time slot, so the line was long!!!

Kona ice was ideally parked, so, as we were standing in the sun, the girls went to get us a cool snow cone treat!  We decided in hindsight that we probably could have split one, so we'll know for next time!

Once inside, there was more waiting to chat with the homeroom teacher.  Ironically, Grace and Juliet both have Mr. Allen, but there are two Mr. Allens and they have different ones! = )  They have all the same teachers, but no classes together, at least on Wednesdays.

I did take a picture of one of the twins at her locker, but somehow missed the other, so to avoid conflict, I'm not including either of them at their locker, but will add them in if I remember to take pictures at a later event!

I feel so sad for Juliet, because she and Kennedy aren't on the same team this year, and she's taking it really hard. = (  I'll do my best to keep them up on playdates!

Grace's friend is on her team, so they have lunch together at least, I'm not sure about class schedules though.

We walked around the entire outer perimeter of the building looking for the 'middle school' sign, but they don't have one! Not even the name of the school!  The girls negotiated for five minutes on their new playground.  I think they'll enjoy it more with their friends!

Not one to give up, we did eventually find a sign, and the girls gave it the state park treatment! = )  I felt like we were quite the trend setters, because as we were leaving, the family that saw us taking pictures with the sign also decided to do it.

Using my basic phone editing software, I wasn't able to make the middle school small enough to fit on the building, so "middle school" just gets to float in the air. lol.

I don't even know what was going on here.  Just my two little sixth graders doing sixth grade things.

I felt like we were about as ready as we could be, but everyone came home on day one emptying their backpacks of things they don't think they'll need after all, and switching to bigger or better or smaller, and pulling out things that they will need after all!

Here's to a great school year, and what should be the final year of three schools!

Emily's Freshman Marching Drills

Last week, Emily and William finished up their school year, and Emily started Freshman Band camp at her new school!  I was so excited for her.

Sadly, for me, Juliet's emergency dentist appointment fell on the same day as her first practice.  Luckily, Avia stepped in and was able to taxi her to practice!  She came home all smiles and excitement; definitely loves it every bit as much as I thought she would!

Fast forward to Thursday, we arrived early for her second practice so that she could be fit for her uniform (since color guard has a separate uniform than the band) but she was told to wait until sectionals.

Grace came with me so that we could try for a third (and what would have been final) time to make sure her ice cream sundae was on display to represent Dimondale.  They didn't put up the paper (that we printed and brought with us) so I don't know for sure that it was a success, but at least the PTO will get one donation from Grace's sundae! = )

One more pose in the giant chair!  Fewer and fewer Crockers came with each trip.

We took our sundaes to go, and got to see Emily in her ranks for the final few minutes of practice.

After practice, we had to wait so that I could pay for her band shoes (because I clicked no, she didn't need them because she could wear Alice's, not considering that color guard would have different shoes.) The financial guy didn't arrive until after five, so I volunteered my time in the uniform room to help fit the incoming freshman.

I'm so excited for Emily's new adventure, but a little sad that Alice isn't going to be joining her on the field in the fall.

Here's to high school band year one for Emily, and high school band mom year two for me!

Alice "H" Awards Ceremony

Students at Alice's high school can earn an H through a few avenues, but the primary way is by having a 3.75 or better GPA during the spring semester of the previous year or fall semester of the current year.  This means that freshman have a single opportunity to ear their H and Alice rocked it.

Look at how close her name is to the top!  I looked and as a high schooler I would have been closer to the end than she is to the beginning of this list!

So, Alice wears this adorable outfit to school, but she wears it with white sandals. Since this was supposed to be a 'dressy' kind of event I asked her to wear some closed toed shoes.  She picked my gardening shoes, as we were rushing out the door, to which the soles are duct taped at this point, because they are only used in my garden. There was no time to problem solve.  And, because she really wanted to drive home the "former homeschooler" look, she wore thick fuzzy socks with them.  She also stood away from the other kids until enough were on the stage to force her to close ranks.

I'm so proud of my Alice, and she marches to her own drum, which is equal parts terrific and terrifying!

The twins were in the audience to support her, and gave her a big "H" afterwards.  Billy had to duck out early to collect Emily and William from a track meet.

At least from this angle you can't see the duct tape.

Very proud of my Amazing Alice!

Spring Band

February and March were busy months for Band!

Alice had a pre-competition concert to help the band get out some jitters.

I was able to volunteer on the day of the competition, but could not get there early enough to see her perform, as the concert was set to play at the same time as drop off for the twins. = (  I did get to see her later in the day though!

Later in the month was the spaghetti dinner fundraiser, where all the bands in the district play in turn, so that everyone has a chance to eat and watch their children play! (And you don't have to sit through dozens of songs without your child on stage.)

Alice's group was the last to play, so we were there for the duration of the event.  Emily ran into an old friend, so she was walking around most of the time, and Alice had to go warm up, so the remainder of the family did what we could to entertain ourselves.  William knocked out his multiplication game, and Billy used AI to entertain the twins for a bit.  It was a long night though.  Next year, I'll have way more on stage, since Emily and William are moving back to our home district.

Emily also had a band 'workshop' day in there, but since it was her party day, I was home setting up for her guests, and Billy had to go pick her up.

I think Alice, Emily, and William all have one more concert this year, in May, and then we are gearing up for summer marching band season again! Alice has decided that she does not want to do band again in the fall, so she will be leaving, but Emily wants to join the color guard, so I'll still have one in marching band.  William plans to continue to play trombone at the Jr. High, and the twins will both be on Clarinet in beginner band (though Grace wants to change to percussion in seventh grade.)

The list we received for High School band events felt impossibly long when he sent it, I absolutely can not believe that we are nearing the end of it!

Other Fun Things!

Juliet wanted one of the 'fancy' braids that I'd given Grace after watching a video.  Hers came out much cuter, since I had experience the second time!

I think this might have been a particularly flat pretzel that Juliet found in her snack?

My mom drove up from Florida, with a car full of things for us to sort.  When going through the pile, I ended up 'upgrading' my zipties, because Grandpa's were better. = )

I also took the opportunity to prune, so now the drawer is a little cleaner and easier to navigate.

One afternoon, Billy and I decided to finally try the Korean BBQ place that opened up right next to the thrift store that I frequent.

We went in with no expectations, and no understanding of how it worked, and were suitably impressed!  You use a tablet to order cut meats and veggies, then use the hot grill to cook them at your table!  There is a traditional buffet area with extra veggies, and dozens of sauces, and desert!

The half-moon orange slices there are pumpkin, and they were so good on the grill!

The deserts all looked so good, I wanted to try one of each!  I tried to eat at least half of each one.  Billy didn't care for any.

Hopefully, once Billy lands another position, we can take the kids there sometime!  If not, I'm sure glad that we got to try it out!

When I took Emily to get fitted for her braces, she really wanted to choose the metal ones, despite their drawbacks, because people at her school who get braces, get a few minutes of attention.  She didn't want to miss out on that, so I bargained with her, offering her <permanent> purple hair dye, if she would get the Invisalign braces.

She agreed, and so after my next shopping trip, we put two large stripes of purple on either side of her face.  There was not enough dye in the container to color the entirety of her long, thick hair, so it was probably good that we hadn't planned on that.

Alice requested brown pants to wear with her pusheen shirt.  I bought 5 pairs at an estate sale (she likes the elastic waists) and she picked two.  These were the lighter, and softer, of the two she chose. = )

One day, my scheduled allowed for me to sub in the early childhood center in Potterville.  There were only four students, but the teacher definitely needs a second adult in there!  It wasn't a long or hard day, but I was sad that I didn't spy either of my children during their lunch (while we were out on the playground and I could, possibly, have seen them.)

Alice had a playdate scheduled, but totally forgot about it.  When she arrived, her friends were already in costume, and greeted her at the car. lol.  We had a party to go to that evening, so unfortunately she was not able to make up the lost time by staying later.  But, I think she had a good time!

They had these crackers during lunch on a different sub day.  The two cookies they chose to put on the outside were relevant to me, and from my vantage point, I could only see Texas cookies on the students' plates, so I thought maybe they were exclusively Michigan and Texas?  But it turns out those were just they ones they chose to picture, and many (probably all) of the states are represented according to the twins, who also had them for lunch.

Cali was cleaning out some American Girl Dolls and Toys, so Haley sent a doll and selection of accessories up here to me.  I was just trying to clean up, so placed the doll in the closest and promptly forgot about her.  A few weeks later, Grace and Juliet found her.  They've named her June, and she is the doll for guests. = )

Last week was conference week at all three schools.  So, I spent 3 separate evenings chatting with my children's teachers.  I knew what to expect at everyone's except for Alice's.  I chose to go on band rehearsal night, since I was already over there.

First off, let me say that they have it super well organized.  All the teachers are at tables in the commons, in Alphabetical order, and they have a bell to signal time.

I was under the impression that I would be going between classrooms, so I gave myself 5 minutes between each meeting, so as not to miss out on any of my 5 minutes of discussion time with the teachers.

Well, I will intentionally schedule them 5 minutes apart next year, especially with two sets of teachers, because it took away the stress of finding the next teacher, or if the parent in front of me went over, I knew taking a couple of minutes after wouldn't eat into my next appointment.

As I went from teacher to teacher, I heard only wonderful things about Alice. Apparently, she participates in class, gets her work in on time, raises her hand, and shows off her creativity.  I was so stinkin proud!!!  Last year, I was told "Alice is smart, but..." this year there were not buts!!!!

She came home confused in Geometry, not understanding sine, cosine, and tangent.  While I was surprised that the teacher would cover them all in a single day, we spent around half an hour going over them, until she could calculate them independently.  Her teacher praised her for knowing how to do it ahead of the group, as all that he had given them was a chart, and they were just matching up ratios to triangles. lol.

Her ELA teacher told me about an assignment that she wrote about bats, and the words formed a picture of a bat inside a cave.

In Science apparently, she was too quick to guess what was in the 'mystery' box.

It would seem that the transition to high school has been good for her. <3

Emily found a new outfit at the rummage sale on Friday.  The pants were way too long, but it was an easy enough alteration.  Though I didn't cut them, in case she grows and wants to keep wearing them, so they are just tacked up.

The kids, mostly Grace, have been asking to get out the Halloween village.  I told them that they were welcome to get it out whenever they wanted but I wasn't willing to do it until October 1st.  After seeing that October first falls on this coming Tuesday, we backed up the set up to Sunday.

Last year, there was barely enough room on the table for the houses that we bought for Billy, so this year the only new addition was the water tower, since it had a small footprint.  And I really wanted to get him something unique in Frankenmuth.

But then, a few weeks ago, the palliative care thrift store had a sturdy shelf, with no back, for sale for just one dollar!  I bought it for his village, and now we have room for even more!

Considering this one was the priciest of the set, it has been the worst quality!  The cement spinner started clicking just a few weeks into the season last year (and I bought it brand new!), so we had to pad it with foam.  Then the little guy in red popped off before we put it away, so I tried to let it repair in the basement over the year, but it just fell off. And this year, despite having the original packaging, the crane is no longer turning. = (

Avia bought Grace and Juliet some Christmas dresses at the rummage sale, so after their shower Sunday, they, of course, wanted to wear the new outfits.  So, they were wearing Christmas dresses while decorating for Halloween, in September.  At least we have holiday spirit!
