Fallout Watch Party Crafts, So Far

Billy is quite excited for the premier of the Fallout Series that Amazon is putting out in April.  I am excited about a reason to party!  I enjoyed playing Fallout 76 with him a few years ago, the environment, despite being post-apocalyptic, is quite enjoyable.

The fun part of most parties is the decor, so I've started creating some themed items to set out around the party, as well as planning our costumes.

I spied the blue tumblers from across the thrift store and knew I had to have them, especially at only 45cents a piece!  The pitcher was a Kalamazoo rummage sale find!

The vinyl came out too cute!  And our guests will be able to take these home with them if they so choose, or they will donated for some other nerd to find! = )

My next craft was to add out 'vault' number to another rummage sale find: a bright blue polo!  We decided on 82 since it's not assigned to anywhere yet, and it the year we were both born. = )

And, after the party, it can also make a nerd happy. lol.

My most time-consuming craft so far is making some nuka cola caps!  In the inspiration post that I read, she spray painted them red, then printed out some stickers to add to the top.  Well, I didn't have any red spray paint, and my cutter is different from hers, so I just used some vinyl.

3 coats of acrylic paint transformed some used bottle caps into a lovely red canvas.

My machine does not like to cut small things, so these 10 caps took me almost an hour to label!

The vinyl looked pretty good, but on several appliques I lost some letters, so used the negative outline to paint the lettering with white paint.  By the last one, I was a pro and it looked almost as good as the vinyl!

Thankfully, the setting is mostly a wasteland, so the messy lettering is no big deal!

My final craft, so far, comes from one of my favorite parts of playing 76 with Billy: finding plungers!  Whenever one of us would find a plunger, we'd announce "plunger!"  It was utterly ridiculous, and so much fun. lol.

So, William and I snagged 3 plungers from the dollar tree.  We will 'hide' them for our guests to find.  Each one has a prize (that is more than wood & rubber for their inventory!)

The first prize is a bag of rolos, the second prize is a five dollar bill, and the final prize is mac and cheese themed socks (blue & yellow!)

Considering the party is still over two weeks away, I sure am excited about it!

Emily's Optimist Award, Year 2!

Emily was given the optimist award for a second consecutive year!   Sadly, Billy was sick this year, and stayed home, so it was just the two of us.

She was nominated by a different teacher: Ms. Pung! Sadly, she was not able to be there, so she was greeted by a different teacher from their school.

Once again, our state representative was there, which is such a considerate thing in my opinion!  I can only imagine how many ceremonies she has to decline each year!

The speaker indicated to us that should there be a misspelling, we should find him to get a replacement certificate.  In a crazy mishap (the teacher accidentally emailing her sister's name) the optimist award ended up having Alice's name on it instead of Emily's. lol.  All of the other documents were correct, as was the program and the speaker's notes, just the signed state of Michigan form. lol.

She's due to get a replacement soon, hopefully this one will have her name on it!

We sure are proud of our Emily!  May she always be an optimist! = )

Crafts and Projects

The past few weeks have been full of projects and crafts and creativity.  Here are some of the highlights!

Alice is entering into an Easter contest with her drawing of some of her favorite dragons.  Her art has come such a long way and I'm super proud of how good her end product looks!

One of the twins made a tiny envelope out of a fruit by the foot that was leftover from Emily's birthday party goody bags.

Billy designed a birdhouse that was a seven-day print!  Once he finished both pieces, Emily, Grace and Juliet spent some time decorating it.  I don't think any birds have moved in yet, but maybe the next time it warms up?

On our way to pick Avia up from the airport, we saw signs for an estate sale.  Since Emily's party was not until evening, we had time to use up.  I took Emily, Grace, and Juliet with me.  Their prices were awesome!

We bought an entire box of assorted, hand-picked goodies for $1 and I found a rack for my basement door for $5!!  I'd been keeping an eye on a $26 one on Amazon, but the racks were not nearly so deep as this one.  Billy helped me install it, and in no time I'd moved over my baggies and rolls, found a new home for my flour mill and had one opening for a hand mixer!

I feel like we use very few new baggies, and do a decent job of reusing bags.  This was validated by the fact that we still have two boxes of bags that are from HEB.  We moved here 7 winters ago!!! = )

The very next week, I scored a hand mixer for $2!!!  It even came in this lovely case, with a change of attachments.  = )  Upon inspecting it at home, I found that the handle was very sticky, but it was no problem for some goo b gone!

Moving all of the bags and rolls over, as well as my 'random' bags and Billy's cups left so much room in the cabinet, I now have a place to store my dehydrator!!!  It's also much easier to grab the item that I need, since they are no longer in cases or stacked on top of each other. = )

A few weeks ago, I spied some squishmallow grab bags on Aldi's "Aldi Finds" aisle.  They were $10 each, and the squishmallows inside were tiny.  Obviously, I loved the idea, so I raided the squishmallows, that I've already bought, in Sarah's basement.  I found 5 that were of comparable size/area of interest.

My next step was to cut apart an Aldi grocery bag, turn it inside out, tape on the label, then tape it back together.

I printed off the picture of the 'Crocker Easter Collection' so that they could have the full blind bag experience.

Next up was squishing the stuffie into place!

And, finally I rolled up the top and bottom, securing them with a stapler.

Each bag has a mark to indicate which child gets which one, but it might be small enough to avoid detection. = )

Grace taped some eyes on her squishy ball.

The wind made a unique pattern on the bacon grease I set outside to cool.

Emily came home with a massive tear in her jeans, but this time I had my washable marker to make the pattern look more uniform.  I think it came out really cute! I did ask that next time she bring it to me when the hole is a little smaller. = 0

Juliet's playdoh creation.

Grace wanted a 'special' cup in which to make her chocolate milk.  So, she and Juliet spent time crafting some character cups using polystyrene that they found in the recycling bin. = )

Looking at the April calendar, I'm not quite sure when we'll find the time to craft, but I'm sure we'll squeeze it in somewhere!

78 Michigan Parks: Fort Custer Recreation Area #69

This park visit actually came about thanks to a rummage sale in Kalamazoo!

My mom was back in Michigan, for a quick visit, and I found a rummage sale at a church, in Kalamazoo.  While the drive is not terrible, it is a long way to go for just a rummage sale.  So, we packed our lunch and headed down for the 'clearance.'

They had so much left that they were doing fill a bag, and extended the shopping time by an hour to get people to take more!

We left with a bag each, plus a few items that wouldn't fit.

On our way to park, we passed the playground, which of course was of great interest to the children. Emily made a friend, and the twins played together for over an hour.  I spent the time eating my lunch, chatting with my mom, then chatting with a stranger (the grandmother of Emily's friend.)

Our next stop was to be the library, for their book sale! So Avia started walking that way while I chatted with 'my stranger.'  ; )

The next task, finding a spot to park near the library, was tricky.  And to make things worse, Downtown Kalamazoo is filled with one way streets.  There was a wedding going on at a nearby church, so much of the parking was already claimed.  We did finally find a place to park, but it was 30 minute only parking, so we waited a few minutes for Avia to check out**, then started making our way to our final destination of the day.

Fort Custer Recreation Area is right up against Fort Custer, which is a massive area of land!  The recreation Area is on the north side, so you have to go all the way around the base to get to it from the interstate.

We were going to stop here on our way back from Jellystone last year, but the entrance was very ambiguous on google maps, so we skipped it with a car full of tired people, half of whom would not even want to get out of the car.

Ther were signs everywhere telling you what was not allowed, as well as directing you to various destinations.  One of the signs said no metal detecting.  But, when we arrived at the beach, the only other person there was metal detecting!  Emily remarked "the first time I've ever seen someone using a metal detector in person, and the sign says it's not allowed!" lol.

It was cold and windy, but that didn't stop my crew from wanting to play on the beach.

The bathrooms were closed, but from the beach we saw an outhouse like we'd had during our rustic camping experience, so we drove around the lake for a potty break.

By then it was starting to sprinkle a bit, but Emily and Grace wanted more time on the beach, so we drove back to the first beach and gave them ten extra minutes (but Juliet, Avia and I stayed in the car.)

The climbed back in the car windblown, but happy.  On our way out we saw some horses on some of the horse trails!

At the rummage sale, Avia bought some girl scout cookies.  We had some of the Aldi brand at home, so I thought it'd be interesting to compare them.

Left is Aldi, right is the Girl Scout brand.  The Aldi is wider and taller.  I personally like it better.  The Girl Scout version tastes saltier in my opinion; which I know is why you're here or you wouldn't have read this far, right? lol.

It felt really nice to visit another park, during an 'off season' month!  Hopefully we'll find time to visit a few more this summer!

*this post marks the start of the project, and as such, has information about what I hope to accomplish!

**despite Avia getting quite a head start on us, the walk took up the majority of her time. And without parking, we were not going to go in for just a few minutes and make it back to the car. So, poor Avia, she did not get long to book shop this go round.

English Inn Cheat Sheet

For many of our celebration worth events over the past 7 years, we've stayed at the English Inn.  I think we've now stayed 4 times, each time in a different building! lol.  It's hard to remember where each cottage is located, and what it's called, so on our last trip, I made myself a little cheat sheet for future* reference.

First, a map labeled to the best of my ability, using paint, in a 2-minute rush.

It was cold, as it always seems to be when we visit, so the southernmost rooms I didn't walk down to.  But, any that I could snap on our way from the parking lot (or room!) I did.

Royal and Chisolm are in the closest cottage to the inn, on the southside.

Next to them are Raven and Buttercup.

On the north side, even north of the event center is the Honeysuckle Cottage, where we stayed most recently.  I think there are 2 or 3 rooms in the cottage.  The south facing door is Bristol

And the northernmost cottage, of which I am aware, is the Ivy Cottage.  I somehow managed to cut it off on the map, but it is there!  This picture faces northeast from the Honeysuckle cottage.

Now, next time we need to know which room will suit us best, we'll have this handy guide to help us out.  Maybe it will even be warm and I can update the map!!!  But I'm not holding my breath.

*the murder mystery crew did not announce the next (October) mystery event as they've done in the past, and so we are concerned with the possibility that they may no longer be hosting it at the English Inn.  This would be such a shame for us, as it is close by and the food is fantastic!

17th Anniversary - English Inn: Holmes and Watson: The Game of the Evening's Mourning

This iteration of the murder mysteries held at the English Inn just happened to coincide with our 17th anniversary!  Sarah sweetly offered to watch the kids overnight so that we could stay the night after the event, then passed the commitment off to Avia when she returned. It was an extra challenging weekend, since it also coincided with the time change!

The weather had returned to it's usual miserable March cold, and we were staying in a totally different room than our previous visits!

Once we got settled in, we went to the pub to wait until the venue opened.

We were joined by the Olmsteds at the Sherlock and Watson table.  It was awesome to have people that we actually knew at our table!  I hope they had fun too!

The namesakes were not present often, and neither Billy nor I guessed the actor that would play Sherlock!

I spent months on my costume.  Sadly, not nearly as many people dressed up for this theme.

The props were awesome, as were our tablemates!  Thanks to the observation of one of our table mates were able to crack the case before the end of the lines!

As soon as our prime suspect revealed that he had a pet snake, and we confirmed that it was indeed a venomous rattlesnake, I felt extremely confident in our answer, and kept our paper in the air for the duration of the "speed round" since the first time we missed out on accolades because we were too slow!

We got every question correct!  It was really fun, and I totally felt like a celebrity with all of the people who came to congratulate our table! = )

As far as anniversaries go, this has to be in the top 5!  Sadly, they did not announce the next theme as they usually do, leading me to believe that they may be moving venues, or worse, disbanding! = ( Hopefully they are just renegotiating with the English Inn!  It is ideal for us, being just down the road, but we would probably follow them to a new outlet!

For gifts, Billy got me the Murder, She Wrote boxed set!  His gift was an evening out at Nico's = )

I kept having to check my math, because 17 seemed much too high of a number, but the math doesn't lie! Here's to many, many more!
