Creating: Cooking and Crafting

I saw a short video online with some paper stars made from book pages.  So, I tore up a sad book that my mom sourced for us.  I started on the project about a week before Thanksgiving by gluing the pages to boxes out of the recycling bin, but knowing the projects that Thanksgiving would bring, we had to knock it out.  Emily, Grace, and Juliet all helped trace, cut, punch holes, and string the stars for us to hang.  The original had lights, but we weren't quite that fancy.

The Kroger magazine had a special festive issue, and as usual, had some great ideas, but I loved this penguin cracker in particular. = )  So I made some for our most recent visit to the Cornishes.

Alice used the air fryer, for the first time ever, despite the fact that we've had it for four years (according to the date that I wrote on the box when I stuck it down there.)  She was making knock off chick fil a nuggets.  They weren't bad, but not quite like the original.  The first round was pretty overdone, since none of us had ever used an air fryer before, but I fried up the rest using the traditional pan and oil to cook up the remainder of what she had.

When my mom left for Texas last time, she left two bags of kale in our refrigerator, so I thought it high time to make another round of kale and bean soup.

Billy was in the mood to make some fresh bread, so my lunch one day was fully homemade and exceptionally tasty!

I made some sliders for dinner one night, and while making up leftovers, thought that the leftover mulberry jelly that we'd brought home from Clare, and a dash of powdered sugar, would make them in to a Monte Cristo knock-off.  It was pretty good considering I didn't use a fryer!

At some point during the year, I found a cute little turkey craft, probably at a rummage sale.  On Thanksgiving eve, Grace and I put it together to turn it into a magnet.  Sadly, It didn't stick very well, since we had just used a glue stick.  So, when I went to glue the magnt on it the next day, I added more glue, but it didn't get to hang on the fridge, since it had to dry.  But, once it was time to put away all of the Thanksgiving day decor, it was ready to sit until next year, when it will grace our fridge. = )

I was making a chicken and rice casserole one night, but doubled the recipe, to make sure that all of us could have our fill.  Turns out, my dish can't quite accommodate a double portion, so I made a smaller portion out of the rest of it, and froze it, to send over to my mom and sister.

Looking forward to all of the cooking and crafting that the Christmas season always brings!

Thanksgiving 2025

Thanksgiving was relaxing and full of fun and family in our house!

Emily turned our October pumpkin into a turkey.

And the tiny gourd even got a turkey feather!

When Emily set it up outside, she pointed out that it was three holidays in one: a Halloween pumpkin, a Thanksgiving turkey, and snow for Christmas!

We also had our sixth year of tablecloth handprints!  The only thing I dislike about this tradition is having not started it when the kids were younger!  Looking at the twins original handprints, and seeing how many full-grown handprints are on this year is so delightful!

We have nine slots left on this cloth, if my calculations are correct!

A full table, full bellies, and full hearts!

Once the Thanksgiving dishes were cleaned and put away, it was time to get out Christmas decor!  Rauchermann is always a favorite!

And this year, at one of my favorite thrift stores, they had maybe 13 or so figures that match my nativity scene!  At two dollars apiece, I wasn't sure that I wanted to drop that, since they weren't on my wish list.  I compromised and got my five favorites.  When I couldn't stop thinking about them for the next week, I returned and bought the rest of the set!

Look at how full the nativity scene looks!

And, my favorite new addition, the rug seller!  Isn't he fantastic?

Looking through the booklet that my mom had to track her original set, I think I might have to buy a couple of out buildings to go with it! When the kids were helping me set it up, it was so lovely to acknowledge that all the figures were focusing on Jesus, because that's really what Christmas is all about!

We skipped out on the outdoor decorations, because of the dogs in the mudroom, but did manage to get them up the next day before going to the shuffleboard venue.  All in all, it was a good Thanksgiving.

78 Michigan Parks: Maybury State Park #67

It wasn't even a week past William's tooth extraction surgery, when he (and Grace and Juliet) had a scheduled cleaning, back in Ann Arbor.  Well, the stress of it being a Tuesday, the final school day before Thanksgiving break, another trip to the dentist, and it being 6am, had William "hootin' and hollerin' "* about how much he disliked State Parks and didn't want to go to anymore, ever again!

Thankfully, once the appointment had concluded, special drinks were acquired, and fluoride ban had run it's duration, William seemed like a happy, willing participant in our State Park visit.

This round was Maybury state park, which is in metro Detroit, but had previously been closed for updates, so we had skipped over it.   This cover picture was actually at the end, but I'll come back to that.

This state park used to be in a very isolated area, but the amount of new construction and volume of traffic indicates that it is currently in an area rife with growing pains.  We did manage to turn into the park, and got our pictures.

This park is number 67 (six-seven) on our map, so the kids are all making the 6-7 hand sign.

This park was very equestrian centric, but the kids found fun things none-the-less. Stairs to nowhere!

It was wet and dreary, but close to 50F, which is not miserable when you are wearing winter garb.

Youngest at the top, oldest at the bottom.  William is an entire step taller than Grace!

Um, I cannot wait to recreate this when they are adults!

William was the 'horse,' and was an excellent sport about it!

Juliet the conductor.

Once we'd had our fill of the tiny play area, we loaded back up into the car for a quick visit to the thrift shop.  As we were leaving the area, we found another, main, entrance.  We didn't have the time** to further explore, but we did stop to take the 'official' picture, thanks to Avia's encouragement.

I was glad the day ended better for William than it began.  We had a bit of success at the Salvation Army, with two pair of pants for Emily and a jacket for Leon, despite the 15-minute timer I set!

There are still two more Metro Detroit parks on our list, but those will have to wait until spring.

**Enisi and Edudi were due to arrive at 5pm, so we were trying to fit in a little fun post-dentist and pre-grandparents!

Robotics

William has been thoroughly enjoying robotics this year.  He's on the programming team, and the team as a whole seems to apply themselves.

I've volunteered once, and I'm scheduled to help again this weekend.

But a couple of times, I've just dropped him off and picked him up at the end.  The high school team is awesome, and I believe each Jr. High team has a High School student coach in addition to their adult coaches.

William's team is not at the top, nor at the bottom, but at the event above, we got to watch their team jump up like ten places in regional standings!

He has one more practice this week, then Saturday is for qualifying matches!  I'm hoping that they will do well, but as a seventh-grade team, maybe not advancing this year would temper next year?  Or maybe I don't want to spend the following weekend travelling to and from Muskegon? Of course I want them to do well, go team Black!

William's 13th Birthday

As of November 11th, we now have three teenagers in the house!

The night before his birthday, we took one last picture of him as a twelve-year-old!

And, then just a few hours later, we all got up early (some of us twenty minutes, some of us hours) to sing happy birthday to our newest thirteen-year-old!

He was able to open most, if not all of his gifts before it was time to leave.

Juliet played him "happy birthday" on the clarinet.

He really liked the m&m dispenser.  We bought him a solid bag of green m&ms to fill it up.  He was super sweet and shared with everyone!

And, the long-awaited day, he finally got to ride up front!  Alice didn't even fight him, though she usually sits there.  It took some maneuvering, but we did get his trombone in a better configuration.

With all of the robotics events, we didn't plan a birthday party, but I reached out to two of his friend's moms and we were able to have a 'birthday outing' for him at fun city one Sunday.  We didn't rent a room, but did have cupcakes and snacks at a dedicated table!

It was wonderful for him to have Weston & Jacob in attendance, and I think everyone had a good time!

We sure do love our little growing boy!
